In order to acquire the vocabulary I’m looking for, I just write out some text in English, using the vocabulary and expressions I want to learn. Sometimes I just want to see how longer texts would be rendered into the language I am learning. I often can’t remember even the most basic vocabulary, or connector phrases, like “in my opinion” or “in other words”. Often, however, I find myself wondering how I would express certain concepts in the language I am learning. The words and phrases that I am learning are those that I find in the texts that I read and listen to. Most of my learning activity is based on listening and reading. ![]() Using Google Translate to Generate Tailor-Made Learning Content The TTS is helpful but still not perfect! It is always more pleasant and more reliable to hear a natural voice. ![]() Where possible I study and read material where I also have access to natural audio. Google helps to bring this material alive for me as I struggle to improve in a new language. With the help of this, albeit artificial, pronunciation, I can read through material on my iPad or online that would be difficult to read in a conventional paper book. This is valuable for all languages, but especially for Arabic and Persian, which use a writing system that is still quite unfamiliar to me. When I highlight a word, a phrase or a sentence, I hear it pronounced for me in text-to-speech. This is extremely useful, because very often the translation of individual words doesn’t give me a real sense of the meaning of the phrase or sentence. I can highlight a phrase or whole sentence and Google Translate provides an instant translation. Where Google Translate really shines, however, is for phrases and sentences. Google Translate is the fastest off the mark but not always the most accurate or thorough for individual words. However, for a sense of the meaning of a phrase I need to rely on Google translate. Context Reverso is my favourite since it also offers help on verb conjugation as well as providing examples of the word in use. LingQ offers a selection of dictionaries which provide more accurate translations than Google translate of individual words. Most often I am reading on my iPad using LingQ. The inaccuracies in Google Translate are not long term problems, but rather short term irritants. I keep reading in the knowledge that with enough exposure, listening and reading, the language will become clearer. In many cases the meaning is accurate, and where it isn’t I just move on. I can look up the meaning of individual words or phrases using Google Translate. It has been a long road, reading a new and still quite unfamiliar writing system. I’m learning Arabic and Persian, at LingQ. But I am just a humble language learner with no expectations of perfection, and am used to accepting uncertainty as I go about discovering a new language. But this criticism is either from people who expect perfection, or from people who feel machine translation threatens the job of language professionals. I sometimes hear criticisms about the accuracy of machine translation, such as Google Translate. It is more accurate now than even a few years ago, as more and more corpora of language content are processed using artificial intelligence, or AI. In all of the languages where I use Google Translate, it has been improving by leaps and bounds. Furthermore, the accuracy is constantly improving. Thus Google Translate is usually better in languages to and from English, where more such content is available, or for languages with similar word order and structure. The greater the volume of content, the more accurate it becomes. ![]() The accuracy of machine translation is dependent on the amount of language content compared. Google Translate, Multi-Purpose DictionaryĬomputer-based translation technology, such as Google Translate, relies on comparing massive quantities of language content between pairs of languages, in order to establish patterns, or the probability that certain words or phrases in one language will correspond to some other set of words and phrases in another language. In particular I owe a big debt of gratitude to Google, Google Translate and Google Text to Speech, both of which are a big part of my language learning. The fact that I was able to make meaningful progress in languages as different as Russian, Korean, Portuguese, Romanian and Greek, as well as Arabic and Persian, is the result of modern information technology. ![]() Not much more to say here other than thank you, Mr. ![]() On a night where Tom Brady convinced every one watching he was in fact the GOAT, Harlan did the same from the broadcast booth which watching a half-clothed, half-crazed man gain more yards than the Kansas City Chiefs. I synced Kevin Harlans radio call of a fan on the field at Super Bowl 55 with the video Discord Server. We’re slowly getting closer to normal (hopefully) and by normal, that means we’re back to having sporting events with streakers more scantily clad than Tom Brady’s wife at a 1990s Victoria’s Secret photo shoot. The opinions expressed by contributors are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of. Trust me – on those grotty days when it’s freezing cold and chucking it down and all you want is a few salad leaves or a handful of chives, you’ll be much more inclined to harvest them if they’re in a pot by the kitchen door rather than against the back fence! Keep your most-used crops close to the house for easy access Permaculture Plants for Small Gardens In the small garden some of these zones may be less relevant but it’s still worth following in principle. Crops that are the most time-consuming to grow or which are frequently harvested – for instance, salad leaves and herbs – are grown closest to the house, with plants like fruit bushes that require less input or which are harvested infrequently sited further away. Permaculture design uses a system of ‘zones’ which makes it easier to prioritise what to grow where in the garden. In small gardens there are lots of edges butting up against each other, providing the potential for impressive yields for the space. ‘Edges’ in nature, where different habitats meet, are highly biodiverse and productive. Smart gardening techniques such as intercropping and companion planting become even more useful, making the best use of limited space as well as providing natural solutions to common gardening problems such as pests, soil erosion and fertility. Three permaculture principles – ‘Integrate rather than segregate’, ‘Use and value diversity’, and ‘Use edges and value the marginal’ – are particularly important to keep in mind when designing your small permaculture garden. ![]() Even small gardens can produce lots of leaves and other plant material at the end of the growing season! A compost bin or two will go a long way to making your garden more sustainable Consider in-situ composting solutions that require no dedicated space or equipment – invaluable when you have large quantities of organic matter to compost all at once. Even a single compost bin (or two, if you can possibly squeeze them in) will make your garden much more sustainable. Permaculture principle number six is vital: ‘Produce no waste.’ Good planning will reduce issues with unmanageable gluts, and a thriving composting system will turn any vegetable waste that is produced into an incredibly valuable resource. Then use your observations to decide what should grow where. Take note of any low areas where water and frost are likely to settle. Identify where wind passes through and which areas are more sheltered. See where sun and shade fall, and work out how this will change at different times of day and year. It’s worth taking time to just stand still in your garden and look around from time to time, and especially before starting a new garden. Identifying and using your garden’s microclimates helps you to harness the power of permaculture to make your garden more efficient and productive. Permaculture design principle number one is ‘Observe and interact’. There are 12 permaculture principles in total, which can be used to plan your permaculture garden. Permaculture principles can be used to make even the smallest garden more productive Permaculture Principles But for the small-space gardener looking to explore permaculture, it’s a good place to start. That’s simplifying things to a degree that would appal any committed permaculturist, and doesn’t take into account all the other applications for permaculture, which are as far reaching as designing businesses and communities, as well as gardens and farms. The word ‘permaculture’ was originally a contraction of ‘permanent agriculture’, which gives you an idea of what it’s all about: a sustainable growing system that will integrate with our environment in a harmonious way – a backlash against the control-freak, monoculture ethos of most commercial agriculture. ![]() Even gardeners with small gardens can use the basic principles of permaculture to grow an efficient and resilient garden.
